Is Exercise Making Your Stomach Bigger?
As we edge into Summer, well the calendar says we do anyway, it can be really frustrating when you’ve been watching what you eat and taking regular exercise, only to find that your stomach is still pushing out far further that you would expect in your new swimwear.
Well did you know that for most women, carrying out certain types of exercise can actually cause the stomach to get more rounded rather than less, which means you could be getting fitter and more healthy, but your stomach is sticking is just not feeling the benefit.
The problem comes when women exert themselves and try to do too much. As you focus more on the effort you are expending and less on how you are holding your body, the more likely you are to forget the very fundamentals of body toning causing all that hard work to be for nothing, at least for the tummy area anyway.
At the end of the day, the core section of your body is made up of a group of muscles. And like any other muscle in the body, the only way for it to change its appearance is to train it to do something that it is not necessarily doing at the moment.
If your stomach rounds out and you want it to flatten or even go inwards, then you need to tell it this as often as you possibly can and the quickest and easiest way to do this with your stomach is to simply to hold it in.
If the average woman were to simply hold her stomach in during all her waking hours, she could make a significant improvement to her waistline in a matter of weeks and, in turn, this could provide the confidence and incentive to further improve her body shape creating an overall healthier looking form.
But when the average woman starts to exercise in any form, from walking, running, swimming or even cleaning the house or doing the weekly shop, the more energy you exert, the more oxygen you need to breath and as soon as the average woman starts to breath more deeply the first thing they do is relax their stomach muscles and actually push them out to draw in the air required.
And as soon as you start telling already rounded tummy muscles that it is OK to stick out, the muscles themselves will take over and actually continue to grow outwards, negating all the hard work you have done.
But the benefits of holding in your stomach are not just cosmetic. Keeping your muscles toned in this way also provides a firmer core for your entire body making you walk taller and straighter and giving you a more balanced physique which in turn supports your spine and your skeleton reducing the possibility of back pain and joint ailments in later life.
So make sure that what ever kind of exercise you do, from walking to aerobics and yoga through to marathons, and even when you are sitting still just reading this article, give your body the best opportunity to look good, by keeping your stomach in and holding a good posture, and taking back control of your muscles so that you can feel good about yourself. All swimsuits and swimdresses featured in this article are available from Yours Clothing Plus Size Swimwear range.
